If you ever want to relate to a complete stranger, just ask them about themselves. People love to talk about their plans in life, their goals, their past, and their achievements. I ran into a complete stranger who was in college. I used a line that is appropriate for just about any age and it engages almost anyone who loves to talk about themselves. Just ask, "What do you hope to accomplish in the next ten years of your life?" Be prepared to listen when you ask this question, but always follow up with a question that leads towards a spiritual conversation. My new friend Nick told me how he hopes to finish his degree and begin a career in education, but he still wonders what subject he will teach. He also talked about how many times he has changed his major and how he hopes to attend a Division I school next year. Nick had just spent the last ten minutes pouring his heart out to a stranger. Now that we had established a relationship I asked, "Do you go to church?" Try this with someone you know and see where it goes. Just make sure that you bring things back to the cross.
