At wrestling practice today, I noticed a wrestler wearing a t-shirt with the words "Ask me how to get to heaven." I took him up on that offer and suddenly he appeared very nervous. His quick response was, "I don't know Coach Powell. You are the one doing all of the witnessing so why don't you tell me?" Other wrestlers took notice of our conversation and some began to gather around. In the small crowd was a wrestler who had grown up in the church, can quote many verses, and has now turned from the things of God. He couldn't resist throwing in a few gut shots.
Wrestler: Coach, how do you know that you are right? What makes all of the other religions wrong?
Me: All of the other religions are works based. In Christianity, we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. I also take comfort in knowing that He is the only one who defeated death. If you want, we can go and visit the graves of the other "prophets." I can assure you that they are still in the grave.
Wrestler: Do you think homosexuals are going to hell?
Me: Have these homosexuals told lies, stolen, or blasphemed God's name? If so, they are in grave danger.
Wrestler: Why do you witness to people?
Me: Matthew 28:19
Wrestler: I know. Go and make disciples...(mumbling)
Me: What other questions do you have? I have been witnessing for over 84 days straight and I have heard a lot. Maybe I can answer a few questions.
Wrestler: I do have a lot of questions. Hypocrites really bother me. I know that I am not living right, that is why I don't want to go to church. Why all of the hypocrites?
Me: There are a lot of "Christians" who profess with their mouth and deny Him by their lifestyle, but remember this, on the day of judgement you will be all by yourself.
Wrestler: I am young, and I want to have fun. I don't want to be good. When I'm older, I will start living right.
Me:I used to think just like you. I would pray that the Lord would give me 10 seconds before I die so that I could ask for forgiveness, but know this, God will not be mocked. You will reap what you sow.
Wrestler: I know. I've heard it.
Me: Today is the day of salvation. You cannot promise me your next breath. You need to put your trust in Jesus.
Wrestler: (staring at the ground with a smile on his face) I'm number 85, aren't I?
Me: You are.
