It was late in the evening when I had not had an opportunity to share the good news. I went to my computer and googled "24 hour phone line." I called a number that advertised to be a listening ear. I have a lot to say so I decided to give them a call.
Man: Hello, listening ear.
Me: Hi, I'm sorry to bother you but I have a quick question. What do you tell someone who calls and they have been convicted of their sins?
Man: What do you mean?
Me: What do you tell someone who is disgusted with their lies, lustful thoughts, and criminal lifestyle?
Man: We don't tell them anything. We just try to listen.
Me: Do you bring up any spiritual matters.
Man: Some volunteers will bring up spiritual issues if they are religious.
Me: Do you have any spiritual beliefs?
Man: I am catholic but I do not help people in their spiritual pursuits.
Me: Why not? Don't Catholics believe in the Bible?
Man: Unfortunately, I am Catholic by culture. I do not believe that the Bible is the Word of God. Do you?
Me: I do. I believe the Bible is profitable for all things and is sufficient for all of today's problems.
Man: Why?
That was music to my ears. The listening ear became a curious mind. I told him why I believe in the Bible and then he asked, "What do you say about all of the other religions?" It was my pleasure to share with him the ways that man seeks to pacify his conscience. This conversation naturally flowed to the gospel where the man returned to his listening ways. The conversation was rather long so I apologized if I was busying up a line where there may be a true crisis, but told him that the real crisis is that people are dead in their trespasses unless they repent and trust in the Savior. He replied, "I have two lines and the other one has not rung. Thank you for calling." Mr. Listening Ear has some things to think about tonight.
